Senior Summer Explorations: Week One of Exploring Material, Structure, Color, & Mark-Making

Week 1 of my process-driven explorations for my future summer collection

June 23 (1): This is a sketch of a quilt that is meant to be hung on a wall, strictly as art or as something like a headboard. This will have batting, so it could be used as a sound barrier for specific spaces. The original sketch was completed in church amongst my church notes & was rendered later that day on ProCreate, which is what you see now. The different colors and patterns are not meant to be replicated, but shows potential contrast & would use as many scraps as possible.

July 3 (2): I decided to design another tapestry design, this time more focused on my faith in Jesus Christ. This is a loose rendering, but I would intend the lettering to still keep that playfulness of not being perfect. The colors should not be replicated exactly, but there should be a simple rule followed: in each section, I would want a color similar to white to be next to a highly opposite/contrasted color (ex. red, orange, black, etc.). This is inspired by various tapestries found on Pinterest, made by modern folk artists.

July 4-5 (3): I enjoyed Independence Day this year by riding on my uncle's boat with my extended family on Lake Weiss in Cedar Bluff, Alabama. On our way back home, we stopped at The Varsity in Rome, Georgia, which we were so glad was open. We ate the most American food we could think of & left with an iconic paper hat. I poked holes with a needle along the top & used a 1.25mm crochet hook to crochet a lace-like trim around the edge.

July 5 (4): After this, I decided to revisit my old Pinterest board that I once used to save all of my inspiration pins for things I wanted to make, which now has nearly 2000 pins tucked inside. I was reminded of how it is possible to crochet around soda can pull tabs, which brought me here. I was also inspired by Anna Sandler's hanging garland-like string of soda can pull tabs she displayed in 2023 in her senior collection. I love the idea of reusing something so mundane & turning it into something to fill space with.

July 5 (5): Another find on my Pinterest board is that of many crochet granny square patterns originating from Russia, Ukraine, and surrounding countries. The pink square shown is made from 1 such pattern, being altered towards the last row. I didn't like this pattern, but I enjoyed using up this yarn, since this type of yarn is not my ideal.

July 6 (6): I was previously using an old Christmas gift bag to carry clothing donations to the thrift store, until it inevitably ripped apart. I had plans of reusing & upcycling it & it was finally time. I cut out some of the motifs from the bag that depicted a snowy scene & glued it into my notebook on top of paint chips & receipts.

July 6 (7): I found another picture on Pinterest showing a crocheted scarf using a sort of link-like pattern. I tried it out with this green & pink yarn.

July 6 (8): I have used plarn (plastic bag yarn) in a lot of my pieces throughout the years but have never decided on a thickness & uniformity to the strips I cut. With this swatch, I decided to cut them exactly at 1 inch intervals. With the Walmart bag I used, I was able to get 13 strips. I HDC along 15 base sts.

These explorations have prompted me to think more about how I can reuse found objects to recreate something different from it's intended use(s). And because of my current mental state and the state of the society, I see how important it is for me to do something outside of myself. How can I glorify God in my work? How can I encourage the people around me? How can I show the unconditional love of Christ? What can I do to prompt people to participate in the function of our nation? How can I encourage people to vote?

With love,

Caroline
